“UK Car Theft Crisis: 76% Cases Unsolved, New Laws Proposed”

Recent statistics have unveiled that three out of four car theft cases remained unsolved during the past year. The House of Commons library data highlighted that an alarming 76% of all car theft incidents went unresolved in the previous year, with the Metropolitan police force having the lowest success rate at 88% of cases unsolved.

Police forces including the British Transport Police, South Yorkshire, City of London, Sussex, and Warwickshire reported over 80% of car thefts being unsolved. Across England and Wales, a significant 35 out of the 44 police forces had an overall unsolved rate of 60% for car theft cases.

Despite a 12% drop in vehicle crime in the year leading to June 2025, with a 7% reduction in vehicle theft, new legislation is being introduced to prohibit the use of electronic devices that can bypass a car’s security. Offenders could face up to five years in prison for utilizing such devices.

The Liberal Democrats have proposed the establishment of a specialized team within the National Crime Agency to combat organized car crime networks by leveraging data from automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, insurance records, and intelligence from various law enforcement agencies.

Max Wilkinson MP, the Lib Dem home affairs spokesman, emphasized the need for more support for crime victims and criticized past government cuts to police forces. The call for a crackdown on car thefts aims to apprehend long-standing criminal groups and individuals responsible for these offenses.

A spokesperson from the Home Office expressed concerns over the devastating impact of vehicle theft on individuals, families, businesses, and the broader industry. Efforts are underway to tackle these crimes through legislative measures, police training, and collaboration with the automotive industry to address security vulnerabilities in vehicles.
