“Welsh Rugby Legend’s Pub”

On a chilly and damp winter’s day, a cozy country pub exudes warmth and charm, beckoning visitors inside. I was drawn to a quaint country pub nestled in a small village in Vale of Glamorgan for several reasons. Firstly, its stellar reputation for delectable food was a major draw. Secondly, despite cycling past it numerous times, I always resisted the urge to pedal on and couldn’t resist the temptation to step in for a pint.

However, the most compelling reason for my visit was the fact that this pub is owned by a renowned sports figure. Two decades ago, I was among the spectators who witnessed Gavin Henson execute a legendary kick that changed the course of Welsh rugby history. Despite not being Wales’ primary kicker that day, Henson’s remarkable 44-meter kick from a challenging angle secured a pivotal victory against England in Cardiff, marking a significant moment in Welsh rugby.

Henson, known for his distinctive appearance and athletic prowess, rose to fame and captured the spotlight alongside singer Charlotte Church, earning the moniker of the “Welsh Posh and Becks.” Beyond his celebrity status, Henson’s talent and dedication as an athlete shone through, endearing him to fans. While he once embraced the limelight, Henson now prefers a quieter life in St Brides Major, where he resides with his wife Katie.

In 2019, Henson and his wife took over The Fox, infusing new life into the establishment. Following a successful renovation, the pub reopened in early 2020, only to face challenges due to the pandemic and Brexit-related disruptions. Despite these obstacles, The Fox garnered praise for its cuisine and hospitality, with Henson himself engaging in hands-on service.

Stepping into the pub, I immediately felt at ease in its stylish yet homey ambiance, complete with rustic décor and festive Christmas accents. As we settled at a cozy corner table, we savored Butty Bach ale and Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone lager while perusing the menu. The Sunday menu offered a concise selection of appetizing dishes, including crispy ham hock and cod and salmon fishcake, both of which impressed with their flavors and presentation.

For our main course, we indulged in roast sirloin of Welsh beef and shoulder of Welsh lamb, both exquisitely prepared and accompanied by an array of delectable sides. Despite being too full for dessert, the enticing options promised a sweet finish to the meal. The bill, inclusive of starters, mains, beverages, and children’s meals, offered excellent value for a delightful dining experience.

The inviting atmosphere and sumptuous fare at The Fox left a lasting impression, prompting thoughts of a return visit. As I observed fellow diners expressing their intent to revisit, I, too, echoed the sentiment, encapsulating my experience in four simple words: “definitely gonna come back.”
