Man, 59, Dies After Police Encounter in Merseyside

A man aged 59 passed away following an encounter with law enforcement in Merseyside. The incident occurred before 12:24 pm on Monday, January 5, when Merseyside Police officers detained the man on Southport Road in Bootle. During the interaction, the man collapsed and lost consciousness. Despite receiving CPR from officers and prompt ambulance assistance, he was pronounced dead at the hospital an hour later.

Merseyside Police has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and notified the man’s next of kin. The police force expressed condolences to the man’s family. Emergency responders and law enforcement officials cordoned off an area along Southport Road, extending from Aintree Road to Breeze Hill.

Witnesses recounted seeing the man receiving CPR on a driveway before being transported to the hospital. Subsequently, detectives were observed entering and exiting a nearby house, while armed police presence was noted in the vicinity.

Residents described the scene, with one mentioning the swift arrival of multiple police units and ambulances. Another resident recalled observing efforts to resuscitate the individual before he was placed in an ambulance. Paramedic equipment was visible at the scene, and forensic officers later arrived, leading to road closures.
