Aldi has regained its position as the most affordable supermarket in the UK, according to recent research by consumer group Which?. The study compared the prices of a set of 70 grocery items at Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Waitrose, and other chains.
Aldi’s average cost for the 70 items was £121.22, narrowly beating out Lidl, which came in at £122.35, and Tesco at £136.20. Waitrose was found to be the most expensive, with an average cost of £166.79 for the same items.
Which? conducts this comparison monthly to track the pricing of various supermarket chains. The list of 70 items includes both own-brand products and popular branded items like Birds Eye peas and Hovis bread.
In a separate analysis of a larger selection of 183 groceries, Asda emerged as the cheapest option, costing an average of £455.52. Asda’s prices were significantly lower than those of Waitrose, which charged £522.91 for the same items.
Reena Sewraz, Which? retail editor, highlighted Aldi and Lidl as top choices for budget-conscious shoppers, while noting Asda’s competitive pricing for a wider range of branded products. With the holiday season approaching, consumers are advised to compare prices across supermarkets to maximize savings, as choosing one store over another could result in savings of up to 27%.
