Freezing temperatures sweeping across Britain have led to numerous schools closing their doors, giving hundreds of schoolchildren an unexpected day off. The Met Office issued cold weather warnings as temperatures plummeted below minus 10 degrees in Cumbria overnight.
Heavy snowfall, with 20 inches recorded in Banffshire, Scotland, has prompted yellow weather warnings for Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. Additional warnings have been issued for eastern England, western Wales, Devon, and Cornwall.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, warned of ongoing winter weather hazards including low temperatures, snow showers, and icy conditions. Several severe weather warnings are in place, with updates expected throughout the week.
On Monday, hundreds of schools closed in Wales, South West England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, with further closures announced for Tuesday. The UK government has provided guidance for parents to check school closures on the gov.uk website by entering their postcode.
The cold weather is forecasted to persist, with frontal systems bringing rain, sleet, and snow from Wednesday to Friday, accompanied by strong winds. Tuesday’s forecast includes a mix of rain, sleet, and snow in the north, while the south is expected to be dry with sunny spells before precipitation moves in later in the day.
