Keir Starmer and Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in discussions today as the Ukrainian leader geared up for important in-person talks with Donald Trump. The US President and Mr. Zelensky are set to tackle the resolution of the almost four-year conflict between Moscow and Kyiv at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Sunday. Prior to the meeting, Mr. Trump shared on Truth Social about his “very productive telephone call” with Vladimir Putin.
Upon arriving in Florida, Mr. Zelensky conversed with Mr. Starmer, who has been collaborating with European allies to form a Coalition of the Willing. This group of nations has committed to overseeing any peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. Mr. Zelensky expressed gratitude to Keir for the ongoing coordination in a public message.
The Downing Street spokesperson confirmed that the UK Prime Minister had a conversation with President Zelensky, reiterating the UK’s steadfast support for Ukraine’s pursuit of a just and enduring peace. Both leaders condemned Russia’s aggressive actions and recent assault on Kyiv, while acknowledging President Trump’s involvement in peace efforts.
Mr. Zelensky, following discussions with European leaders, emphasized the need for continued pressure on Russia to face the consequences of its aggression. He highlighted the extensive attacks on Ukrainian cities over the Christmas period, emphasizing the destructive impact on infrastructure and lives.
Despite the ongoing conflict, the upcoming talks between Mr. Zelensky and President Trump aim to address a comprehensive 20-point proposal to end the bloodshed. Key topics for discussion include an economic agreement, territorial issues, and the US commitment to provide security guarantees akin to NATO’s Article 5.
As diplomatic efforts persist, Mr. Zelensky remains optimistic about progress towards peace and hopes for constructive engagement with international allies in resolving the conflict.
