The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated cold weather payments in 10 additional postcodes in England and Wales, bringing the total eligible areas to 451, where individuals can receive £25 payouts.
The UK is experiencing a cold spell, prompting various amber and yellow weather alerts for snow and ice across the nation.
Cold Weather Payments are distributed to eligible individuals in England and Wales who are beneficiaries of certain benefits. In Northern Ireland, a similar scheme operates, while in Scotland, support for heating bills is provided annually, not tied to specific cold periods. In England and Wales, the payment is triggered when an area is forecasted to have temperatures below zero for seven consecutive days.
The DWP has announced that 10 more postcodes have now met the criteria for cold weather payments, with activation occurring on January 3. The newly triggered areas are as follows:
Residents in the affected regions may receive the £25 payment in their bank accounts within days. Payments are typically processed within 14 working days after the postcode activation. Eligible recipients will automatically receive the payment without needing to apply.
Minister for Pensions, Torsten Bell, emphasized the importance of Cold Weather Payments in aiding vulnerable households during temperature drops. He also highlighted ongoing initiatives like the Pension Credit take-up campaign and the commitment to increasing State Pension by up to £2,100 over the Parliament term to ensure pensioners receive necessary support during the winter season.
