The Met Office has provided a significant update on snowfall across the UK, alerting the public to widespread snow showers expected in the coming hours. Weather warnings have been issued cautioning people to prepare for icy conditions as temperatures drop below freezing levels until January 5. Forecasts indicate subzero temperatures, with some areas expecting snow accumulation of up to 40cm.
The Met Office has identified regions likely to experience their first snowfall of the year just before the end of the Christmas season. There are five weather warnings in effect until January 5, covering extensive parts of the country where snow and ice are predicted as temperatures continue to fall.
Affected regions include South West England, Wales, East Midlands, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Scotland is expected to witness the most significant snowfall, with warnings in place for heavy snow showers leading to accumulations of up to 30cm. The Met Office advises that snow showers will persist through the weekend, particularly in coastal areas, but should gradually ease by Monday morning.
Additional snow accumulation of 2 to 5cm, locally up to 10 to 15cm in low-lying areas, is possible until Monday morning. Higher elevations above 200m, such as the northwest Highlands and Grampians, may see accumulations of 15 to 30cm. Strong winds may cause drifting snow and temporary blizzard conditions, with the potential for lightning near showers.
