La entertainer La Voix from Strictly Come Dancing delighted passersby on London’s South Bank near Waterloo station with a unique performance accompanied by an orchestra playing instruments crafted entirely from vegetables and kitchen tools. The unconventional band featured carrot recorders, potato flutes, and butternut squash horns.
Together, they delivered a catchy melody encouraging individuals to head home and prioritize dinner. This initiative followed a study conducted by a meal-kit brand, revealing that 45% of participants feel they have fewer family dinners now compared to a decade ago.
The survey, which involved 2,000 adults, also disclosed that 35% believe mealtimes have shifted to later hours due to meal planning, waiting for family members, or work commitments extending into the evening.
One in five employees confessed they only make it home on time for dinner twice a week or less. Interestingly, the research indicated that the preferred dinner time is 6:28 pm, yet only 40% achieve this daily.
On average, individuals dine alone twice a week, with 17% doing so daily, while families gather around the table four evenings a week.
Mimi Morley, the senior recipe development manager for the meal kit brand, emphasized the importance of meals, stating, “They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but they’re all vital. When you’ve had a long day of work, parenting, or anything else, a proper meal at the end of it is often what keeps a lot of people going.”
Despite the decreasing frequency of shared meals, 47% believe that dining together can strengthen relationships and bonds. Additionally, 39% think it can make meals more enjoyable and less routine.
A significant majority (84%) considers it essential for people to share meals with others, whether family, friends, or roommates.

Simple adjustments like meal planning, prepping in advance, or quicker meal solutions can help alleviate these challenges. It’s crucial to prevent meals from becoming mundane so that individuals can truly savor what they eat and with whom they eat.”
