In Suffolk County, New York, a man viciously attacked the mother of his children in her residence before attempting to conceal the crime scene as law enforcement was on the way.
Albaro Chacon, a 38-year-old individual from Guatemala, faced charges of attempted assault, assault, evidence tampering, and three counts of endangering children for the assault on the woman in Brentwood. The victim woke up to find Chacon standing over her bed with a knife, threatening her life.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, Chacon aimed the knife at the woman’s chest, causing her to sustain arm wounds as she defended herself. During the attack, the mother shielded her two-year-old niece who was in the room with her before escaping the house and seeking help from a passerby to call 911. She later discovered that their six-year-old son and five-year-old daughter were left inside the family car.
After the incident, as the woman contacted authorities, Chacon went back inside the house following the young boy’s plea. The court heard that Chacon attempted to clean up the crime scene by using bleach, removing bed sheets, and altering the evidence before the police arrived and apprehended him.
The victim received medical treatment for her injuries at South Shore University Hospital. Chacon was convicted on multiple charges, including endangering children, attempted assault, assault, tampering with evidence, and was sentenced to 15 to 17 years in prison by a New York judge.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A Tierney expressed satisfaction with the sentence, acknowledging the trauma endured by the victim and her children. He emphasized the long-lasting impact of domestic violence on families, stating that the scars of such incidents persist for a lifetime. Tierney extended his sympathies to the victim and her children as they navigate the healing process.
