The head of Russia’s sole registered anti-war party has affirmed his commitment to remain in the country and advocate for change, despite mounting pressure from authorities leading to the party’s exclusion from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court decision to block the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko from the September elections was perceived by party leader Nikolai Rybakov as a response to the resonance of their calls to end the ongoing war in Ukraine among voters.
Rybakov emphasized the importance of the overwhelming public support for their cause over the court’s ruling, citing a vocal display of solidarity from hundreds of supporters outside the court venue. Yabloko, previously a prominent liberal voice in parliament and a government critic, now holds only a few regional seats and lacks representation in the State Duma, dominated by the Putin-backed United Russia party.
Despite United Russia’s anticipated dominance in the upcoming elections, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would present a formidable challenge if permitted to participate. The party is currently appealing the Supreme Court’s ruling, which accused them of receiving undisclosed campaign backing from Western sources, among other allegations they refute.
In his office, Rybakov reiterated his determination to remain in Russia despite stringent censorship laws and wartime regulations that have compelled many opposition figures to flee or face prosecution for expressing anti-war sentiments or dissent. He underlined the necessity of effecting change within Russia by being present in the country, emphasizing his commitment to the cause with a peace dove pin on his lapel.
The opposition leader noted the growing support for Yabloko’s peace-focused manifesto, which resonated with a significant portion of Russian society eager for an end to the conflict. Social media has been abuzz with videos backing Yabloko, featuring individuals symbolically holding apples or dancing to Russian tunes referencing the fruit as a nod to the party’s name and message.
