Scottish music icon Lulu has revealed that she still harbors a “healthy fear of relapse” following her journey to sobriety in 2013 after attending rehab in the United States. The renowned singer, known for hits like Shout, acknowledged her alcohol issues 13 years back during her 65th birthday celebration. In a recent interview, the 76-year-old Eurovision champion shared insights on how she manages her addiction, emphasizing that a return to drinking would spell disaster for her. Lulu, who kept her recovery private until the publication of her memoir last year, expressed a sense of liberation after opening up about her struggles.
During a conversation on Matt Willis’ podcast, Lulu disclosed that her last drink was on November 3, 2013, marking a significant personal milestone in her battle with alcoholism. She highlighted the importance of realizing that addiction is an illness, a revelation that brought her relief as she had previously blamed herself for her struggles.
While maintaining a vigilant stance against relapse, Lulu admitted occasional temptations but stressed the severe repercussions that a return to drinking would entail. The singer, who scored her first Top 10 single in the UK with Shout in 1964, recounted the pivotal moment when she decided to seek help after a poignant discussion with her niece about a friend’s alcohol-related struggles.
Following her rehab stint in the US, Lulu diligently attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for five years to support her recovery journey. She candidly admitted to secretly drinking every night during her participation in Strictly Come Dancing in 2011, describing herself as a “highly functioning alcoholic” who managed to maintain appearances despite her inner turmoil.
Lulu’s story serves as a testament to the ongoing battle against addiction, with her willingness to share her experiences shedding light on the challenges many face in overcoming substance abuse.
