“Storm Harry Strikes: Malta Transformed into Deserted Island”

A recent severe storm named Harry wreaked havoc on the picturesque island of Malta, transforming it into a deserted area as locals and visitors sought refuge indoors. The storm brought intense winds reaching 120km per hour and powerful waves that breached sea defenses, causing flooding in coastal towns like Marsaskala. The impact was significant, with debris strewn across the streets and resorts overwhelmed by the sudden surge.

Due to the adverse conditions, ferry services between Malta and Gozo were suspended, prompting hotels on the main island to offer discounted accommodations to stranded travelers. MaltaPost halted deliveries, and waste collection was temporarily halted to prevent rubbish bags from being scattered by the strong winds. The streets remained empty as residents followed safety protocols to stay indoors during the storm.

Reporter Rachael Penn from The Mirror experienced the chaos firsthand, having chosen Malta for a winter getaway. Typically known for its pleasant weather in January, the island was hit unexpectedly by Storm Harry, bringing heavy rain and fierce winds that led to severe weather alerts advising people to remain indoors until the storm subsided. The usually vibrant city of Valletta turned into a ghost town, with businesses closed, eateries shuttered, and tourist sites inaccessible.

Despite the adverse weather, Rachael took the opportunity to explore the quiet streets of Valletta, observing the city’s historical charm without the usual crowd of tourists. She ventured to notable spots like Republic Street and Upper Barrakka Gardens, where the strong winds cut short her outdoor exploration. Seeking refuge in one of the few open pubs, she continued her journey by enjoying a meal at a favorite restaurant, Cafe Jubilee.

As the storm gradually eased, flights resumed their schedules, and the island began recovering from the storm’s aftermath. Rachael reflected on the resilience of Malta, noting that even amidst the destruction, the island’s beauty remained intact. Witnessing the storm’s impact firsthand emphasized the island’s vulnerability to nature’s forces, reminding everyone of the unpredictable power of the elements.
