Wisconsin woman scammed of £60,000 in online romance scheme

A woman in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, fell victim to an online romance scam that cost her nearly £60,000. Cindy Palecek, a 67-year-old pensioner, was charmed by a supposed construction worker who offered her a high-return investment opportunity to help with her financial struggles. Trusting him, Cindy invested the money, only to have it disappear, leaving her in a dire financial situation.

Cindy, a retired physical therapy assistant, expressed her distress over the situation, feeling betrayed and scammed. She suspects that the man she met online embezzled her funds, leading her to re-mortgage her home and take on additional work to repay the debt. Despite her efforts, she worries about the long-term impact on her financial stability and future.

The scam involved the man setting up an account that Cindy believed was hers, only to realize later that it was controlled by him. When she tried to withdraw a portion of her investment, he vanished, cutting off all contact. Cindy has since shared her story as a cautionary tale, urging others to be vigilant against similar online scams and to avoid sending money to unknown individuals.

To support Cindy in recovering from the financial loss, a GoFundMe appeal has been launched to help alleviate some of the burden she now faces. As she navigates the aftermath of the scam, Cindy hopes to raise awareness about the dangers of online deception and prevent others from falling into similar traps.
