Trump Criticizes UK Over Chagos Islands in Greenland Bid

Donald Trump has directed criticism towards the UK as he escalates his threats to acquire Greenland.

In a recent post on Truth Social, published at 6:38 am UK time today, the US President labeled the UK’s decision to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius as an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY.” He argued that this move further justifies the need for the US to assume control of Greenland.

Sir Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with ministers at his weekly Cabinet gathering today, in response to Trump’s trade war threats regarding Greenland. Trump reaffirmed his commitment on Monday to impose tariffs on the UK and its European allies due to their opposition to his Greenland acquisition plan. In light of this, the European Union plans to convene an emergency summit in Brussels on Thursday to address Trump’s latest ultimatum.

In his social media post, Trump criticized the UK for planning to cede the strategic Diego Garcia Island to Mauritius without a valid reason. He emphasized that this perceived weakness would not go unnoticed by global powers like China and Russia, who prioritize strength in international matters.

Trump’s assertion continued by stating that the UK’s actions are detrimental to national security interests and underscore the necessity for Greenland’s acquisition. He urged Denmark and its European allies to make the correct decision in this regard.

The Chagos Islands have been under British control since 1814, with Diego Garcia hosting a crucial US military base. Last year, the UK agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while retaining control of the UK-US military base on Diego Garcia. The Trump administration previously praised this agreement as a significant accomplishment.

Amidst European allies expressing support for Greenland’s sovereignty, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized that the fate of Greenland rests solely with the Greenlanders and Danes. Denmark has warned that any attempt by the US to seize Greenland would jeopardize NATO’s existence.

Trump’s recent social media activity comes after he reiterated his stance on the importance of Greenland for national and global security. He has threatened to impose tariffs on the UK and other NATO members until a deal is reached to purchase Greenland from Denmark.

Responding to Trump’s tariff threats, various European leaders have called for de-escalation and dialogue to resolve the issue amicably. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need to avoid conflict and expressed willingness to protect European interests if necessary.

As tensions escalate, diplomatic efforts are underway to address the dispute and seek a mutually beneficial resolution.
