The Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall, has expressed support for Ofcom in potentially blocking Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, due to concerns about its Grok AI bot generating sexualized images of children. She emphasized that Ofcom would have the full backing of the Government if it decided to use its authority under the Online Safety Act to restrict access to services in the UK.
In response to reports of users utilizing the Grok AI feature to create inappropriate images, Ofcom quickly engaged with X, prompting the platform to restrict the image generation feature behind a paywall. This move was met with further criticism from government officials, labeling it as a premium service for creating deepfakes, which is deemed insulting to victims of gender-based violence.
Ofcom recently addressed the issue, stating that they had reached out to Elon Musk’s company and set a deadline for explanations, with a commitment to assess the situation promptly. Grok, a free AI assistant on X, has faced scrutiny for its image and video editing capabilities, which have been linked to the production of unauthorized content, including deepfakes.
The UK has strict laws against the creation and dissemination of non-consensual intimate content, especially involving children. Tech companies are mandated under the Online Safety Act to mitigate the risk of users encountering illegal material on their platforms and promptly remove such content when identified.
Secretary Liz Kendall condemned the manipulation of images of women and children, urging Ofcom to utilize its legal authority granted by Parliament. She emphasized the importance of swift action and compliance with UK laws, warning of potential service blockages if necessary. Plans to ban nudification apps and criminalize the creation of intimate images without consent are also underway to enhance online safety measures.
Ofcom has the power to impose fines on businesses, take legal action, and collaborate with other entities to restrict operations of non-compliant platforms. Ms. Kendall reiterated the commitment to ensuring the safety of women and girls online, affirming zero tolerance for inappropriate behaviors in both virtual and physical realms.
